Maternal Age at First Birth and Parental Support: Evidence From the UK Millennium Cohort Study

Abstract Using nationally representative data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study (n = 7396), we investigate whether mother’s age at first birth is associated with level of support she receives her parents around time birth. We apply latent class analysis to construct a summary measure five dimensions parental (contact mother, contact father, childcare, monetary transfers and financial for buying essentials). The results show that negatively maternal birth, older mothers being less likely than younger receive support. Adjustment socio-demographic characteristics partially attenuates association. Given positively adult children’s well-being, labour force participation, fertility suggest integrating into work investigating causes consequences timing births has potential enrich expand our understanding costs benefits delaying childbearing towards ages.
